FWD Life Launches Bebas Optimal Unit-linked Insurance

Jakarta, July 20, 2017 - PT FWD Life Indonesia (“FWD Life”), a digital life insurance pioneer, today launched BEBAS OPTIMAL, a unit-linked insurance product which provides comprehensive life protection and long-term optimum investment. The product is offered through the agency distribution channel and supported by FWD Life’s proprietary digital technology innovation.

FWD Life is introducing BEBAS OPTIMAL amid robust macro-economic and increasingly attractive market conditions after Standard & Poor’s (S&P) bestowed investment grade ratings on the country recently. This indicates potentially stronger public trust in unit-linked products as one of the main options to obtain protection as well as investment.

FWD Life Chief Product Proposition & Sharia, Ade Bungsu said, “This product is being launched to offer both protection and investment options to increasingly mid-affluent savvy customers in Indonesia, which signals a time of highly promising growth for unit-linked insurance products.”

A recent Boston Consulting Group research report illustrated that Indonesia’s middle class will rise to 141 million people, or 53% of the total population[1]

According to Financial Services Authority data, as of April 2017, total assets in Indonesia’s life insurance industry rose 20.14% to Rp 423.69 trillion compared to the same period in 2016 with Rp 352.64 trillion. Based on this data, the value of investment in mutual funds which constitute the unit-linked investment portfolio reached Rp 103.44 trillion or 25% from the total life insurance industry assets in Indonesia.[2]

BEBAS OPTIMAL has four key benefits:

  1. Allocates 100% basic premium into investment from the first year.
  2. Free monthly fees, acquisition fees and switching fees if the customer transacts online.
  3. Offers comprehensive protection from various death risk up to 80 years of age with minimum exclusions. In fact, for the risk of death or total permanent disability due to accidents in public transportation, Sum Assured will be paid 200% or maximum Rp 2 billion.
  4. Flexibility for customers to choose the type and allocation of investments and premium payment tenor (3,5 or 10 years), and to increase investment funds at any time.

FWD Life’s strategic partner, PT Schroders Investment Management Indonesia (“Schroders Indonesia”) will be responsible for the investment management of BEBAS OPTIMAL. This will allow customers ease and flexibility to optimize returns without affecting the diversification of risk management processes.

Schroder Indonesia Intermediary Business Executive Vice President, Bonny Iriawan added that a number of factors have contributed to driving up the Indonesian market’s condition, which shows a positive trend. Some of the factors are the conducive global stock market’s conditions and Indonesia’s macro-economic fundamentals, especially the increase in trade surpluses, curtailing current account deficits, and rising fiscal income. “Plus, Indonesia has just received investment grade ratings from S&P and the government is aggressively building infrastructure,” said Bonny.

All the positive factors prompted foreign inflows, catapulting the Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) 11.5% since early 2017 (year-to-date). However, Bonny would like to remind investors to be cautious of other factors, such as shifts in the national political condition, fiscal and monetary stimulus constraints and U.S.’ and China’s governments’ policies. Even in light of all this, investors are still highly enjoy a return from the capital gain in Indonesia’s capital market. Bonny explained, that currently gains in the Composite Index on the Exchange remain lower compared to the Indexes on other bourses in other countries such as South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and India. “There is, of course, a possibility of an upside of share prices on the Indonesian Exchange,” Bonny concluded.
